Caribbean Geopolitics and Curaçao’s Isla Refinery

08 December 2023

This recent Global Americans article by Scott B. MacDonald discusses the odyssey surrounding the reactivation of Curaçao’s oil refinery, which has been idle since 2019.

The author argues that whether the refinery is reactivated or not, there is no escaping geopolitics for Curaçao. If the facility becomes operational, this would result in mounting pressures to contain its carbon dioxide emissions. Conversely, a failure to reopen would make Curaçao a security focus for both the Unites States and the Netherlands, due to the possibility of another Chinese attempt to gain access to the refinery.
